Gutter Cleaning

What's included in a gutter cleaning?

A standard gutter cleaning includes clearing and disposal of the debris from all your gutter troughs, checking and clearing of all downspouts to ground level, and a thirty day warranty against any returnings issues or clogs within that time. We verify cleanings with photos of the finished sections.

“Gutter Cleaning” is the most commonly used term for this service, but it’s somewhat of a misnomer as the goal is to ensure the gutters are functioning properly and draining water away from your home rather than to fix any cosmetic blemishes. If you’re looking to have your gutters simply look cleaner, you may wish to search for “gutter brightening” instead.

How are downspouts handled?

For clarity, when we refer to “downspouts” we mean the metal tubes that connect to the gutter and channel water to the ground. Anything beyond the end of the metal downspout is an accessory and not necessarily serviced as part of the gutter cleaning — we do offer pressure jetting of these extensions when needed.

We check all downspouts and ensure clearance to ground level. The first test after visual inspection is to drop a large marble into the opening and ensure it can make it through. If it doesn’t, the best approach is generally to disassemble the downspout and physically clear the clog. This work is included as part of a standard cleaning.

We are often asked whether we “flush” downspouts, and the short answer is no, because it doesn’t work well. While we do use hoses and water for certain types of debris, water alone usually isn’t strong enough to clear clogs inside — or the rain would have cleared it out.

What if my downspouts go underground?

You may have downspouts that attach to an additional pipe that continues underground and drains some distance away. We are one of the few companies that do offer pressure jetting of buried downspout extensions as an additional service when needed, but it is not automatically included in a standard gutter cleaning because it requires a completely separate process and specialized equipment to do so.

Just because you have these extensions does NOT always mean they need any service, however. The signs of a clogged extension are missing drain caps (IE, you have no idea where they go) or water overflowing at the bottom of the downspout rather than over the top of the gutter.

Do you take debris with you?

Yes, we take the vast majority of debris with us. We say majority because it’s inevitable that some small bits of debris will break apart and float away, particularly dry tree litter, and fine dirt and dust is obviously too small to be picked up and is instead blown or rinsed away. We take great care to clean any areas we’ve worked over, however, and anything substantial is bagged and removed.

One exception when applicable are larger tree limbs or branches found on roofs; we do our best to remove these as a courtesy when safe to do so, but we don’t always have the room to carry these off with us.

What are verification photos?

When we finish an appointment and send your bill, we’ll attach a collage of photos showing your gutters and verifying work was completed. Typically we send 9-18 shots, depending on the size of the home. We aim to provide shots of virtually all cleaned sections so you can see for yourself they are finished, and we prioritize photos the highest and most difficult.

We will also take photos of some of the worst clogs before cleaning for comparison, but it’s important to know we prioritize photos of finished sections rather than giving before photos of every section. This is simply to keep the number of photos we need to take, sort, deliver, and for you to view at a manageable level. For this same reason, we often skip taking photos of sections you can clearly see yourself from a window.

What is the warranty for?

Our warranty for a standard gutter cleaning means that if you experience any additional issues with your gutters within thirty days of prior service, we’ll return to check and clear whatever is necessary to fix the issue. We provide a warranty primarily to help make scheduling easier, particularly in the fall. It’s very tempting to try and wait until every last leaf has fallen, but this often ends up resulting in skipping cleaning entirely if freezing temperatures arise. The warranty is intended to give you a wide buffer with which to schedule. It also prevents you from needing a whole new cleaning when debris builds up shortly after a cleaning.

Please note that your gutters see debris CONSTANTLY, no matter where your home is. Not only from tree litter, but also from bird’s nests, kids toys, fireworks, shingles, and all sorts of other things. If you have an issue many weeks after your cleaning you hadn’t noticed before, it’s very likely to be something new rather than something we’ve missed. But worry not, we’ll take care of it either way!

While we fully encourage you to use your warranty we do ask that you do so only when you genuinely suspect there is an issue and can give a specific area to check; it is not a “buy one, get one” offer and abuse forces us to raise pricing for all.

Drain Jetting

What is drain jetting?

Drain Jetting, or pressure jetting, is the process used to clean buried PVC and corrugated downspout extensions or drains that have become clogged. First note that this is not automatically necessary, and is generally only done when truly needed.

A specialized, high-pressure nozzle is snaked through the drain simultaneously forcing large a large volume of water both backward and forward at high pressure. The nozzle pulls itself through the drain, breaking up clogs and debris of all kinds into small pieces that are flushed out. In addition to clearing out internal debris, it’s also an excellent way to find out where these drains actually go and locate drain caps that are frequently lost under landscaping.

This service can be scheduled by itself or with a gutter cleaning, but must be quoted and selected directly. It is not included with gutter cleaning.

How do I know my buried downspouts are clogged?

Drain Jetting is only applicable to downspout extensions, typically of black corrugated pipe and sometimes of white PVC, that connect to the bottom of the downspout and continue underground to drain elsewhere.

The most obvious sign of a blocked extension is water backflowing from the base of the downspout where it meets this extension. This typically indicates water is making it through the downspout, but not through the extension. It may also be necessary if you’re unsure where these drains actually go; the pipe itself may be mostly clear, but landscaping could be covering the drain cap where it should exit.

We can often test suspected drains for flow before needing to jet them. If you have removable, entirely above-ground extensions, these do not require jetting and are usually cleaned out as a courtesy with a typical gutter cleaning.

What is the process to jet buried downspout extensions?

We require an outdoor faucet connection to supply our pressure jetting equipment with water. During the process, we’ll have a few hoses reaching from our vehicle to the service points. If the location of the drain caps is known, we’ll start there and pull backwards from the downspout. If the cap locations are unknown, we’ll start from the downspout end to find them first before switching sides.

The high pressure line is ran up and down the length of the drain several times, breaking up debris and pulling it back towards the drain cap and out. While we pick up most tangible debris, it’s important to know that a great deal of muddy water is likely to exit these caps and pool nearby but the goal is to ensure this is the last time that happens. When we’re finished, you should see standing water of a light brown color.

My downspout drains are full of water, is it normal?

Yes, it is perfectly normal to see standing water at the drain caps of buried extensions, especially after any significant rain, and is typically a good sign. These drains are rarely positioned in a way that allows gravity to force all of their contents out. Instead, the pressure of active rainfall forces debris and any excess water out while the remainder fills the pipe and very slowly evaporates.

Counterintuitively, it is also good to find some debris underneath these caps as this indicates the debris is flowing all the way from the gutter interior and through to this point, precisely as intended. It is NOT normal to see a perfectly dry drain after a rain shower, or to see debris entirely blocking the pipe.

How is underground drain jetting quoted?

Unlike gutter cleaning in which we are able to give an exact total, drain jetting is quoted as the cost per individual downspout with an extension that requires service. You may need none, one, or several. If multiple downspout extensions share a drain cap we frequently discount the rate where appropriate but the rate is per downspout, not per drain cap, since multiple clogs can exist in each branch. We do not charge for extensions we are unable to clear.

Since we prepare our estimates using online imagery, we typically can’t get a perfect count of your extensions. We also won’t know which actually require service until we’re on site and have disassembled the bottom portion of the downspouts, which simply isn’t practical to do for a quote. If you already know how many extensions you want serviced, we can happily quote for that number.

General FAQs

How do I schedule?

You can select your service date via our scheduling page, or through the link included near the bottom of your quote. By default, appointments are scheduled for specific day but not a specific time. We’ll route all of the appointments for the day in the most efficient order, to be completed between 9AM and approximately 6PM.

How do I pay for service?

After your appointment, we will email you an invoice via Square that can be viewed and paid online. You’re also welcome to mail a check if preferred. This invoice will also contain a written recap of what we found, what we did, and anything to watch for going forward. It’s also where we’ll link your verification photos, at the very bottom of the invoice.

These invoices are processed via Square, the same system we use for estimates. It may take up to two business days for your invoice to be delivered, so that we can sort your photos and give a robust recap. Sometimes these may get sent to your spam folder.

Do I have to be home, or what if I want to be?

You do not have to be present for service, or come out to greet us if you are. Before Covid, it was rare for anyone to be home while these days it’s common for them to be inside but tied up working remotely. We want to minimize the impact we have on your day and are fully able to complete service without assistance.

That said, some clients specifically want to be present either to point out specific problem areas or just to make sure the work is done — and that’s completely okay, too! If you’d like to be present during service and are not at home all day, please reach out so we can give you a morning appointment with a more precise time. Typical appointments are booked for completion in geographical order between 9am to 6pm as noted below.

What time will you arrive?

Standard appointments are scheduled for specific dates, but not specific times. We complete stops in the most efficient geographical order, which is one of the keys to our low pricing. A crew may arrive anytime between 9AM and approximately 6PM to begin service. We’ll alert you we’re on the way via email or text about 30 minutes beforehand, and provide photos alongside your invoice when we leave.

Are you insured?
